Many Katy area people may know Herman Meyer only as the owner/operator of Meyer Foods, which includes Midway Meat Market, Midway Deer Processing, and Midway BBQ, but he has always had a hands-on approach to all of his businesses.

Mr. Meyer is an avid wild game hunter and devout Christian.  He and his wife Patsy live on a 180-acre ranch in Katy where he raises cattle, elk, and deer.  They attend church every Sunday.  He works tirelessly to improve his business daily, and he believes in giving back to the community of Old Katy.

“When I came to Katy,” Mr. Meyer says, “the population was somewhere between 300 to 400 people.”  He learned the grocery business when he was in the fourth grade when he started working at a local store owned by Bill Dube. He made $20 a month—big money for a kid in the 1940s. His graduating class from Katy HS was 16 students in 1954.  He went off to college at the University of Texas and earned a bachelor's degree in industrial management in 1958.  Mr. Meyer, fresh out of college, young and single, moved up to the top of the draft boards. He volunteered to join the Army in 1958 and spent two years in active duty in Fort Knox, KY.

Midway Meat Market’s beginnings actually started back in 1961, when Mr. Meyer was discharged from the Army. He then began working at Dube’s Super Market in Katy.  After 4 years of working at Dube’s, Mr. Meyer decided he wanted to make money for himself and become his own store keeper. The chance finally came in 1967, and with his father’s help, Midway Meat Market was born. The store still is located at 5901 Highway Blvd.   The meat department is one of his favorite parts of the store, and with his love for wild game hunting, he decided to open a section for wild game processing.  In 1970, our first year in that business, we received 125 animals.  By the early 2000s, the number had grown to several thousand. We accept elk, caribou, and mule deer  year-round, but our primary business is the white tail deer.

Our big restaurant, Midway BBQ, started off as a shack on the side of the legendary grocery store in the 90’s. Mr. Meyer saw that his customers had nowhere to go for good BBQ and wanted them to have a place where they could have some.  Since then we have built an 8500 sq. ft. building that is full service restaurant, banquet facility, and offsite catering company.  People come from all over to enjoy the great BBQ and hospitality.
We have also added a Burger/Deli inside of our meat market that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. You are able to enjoy breakfast tacos, BBQ, burgers, sandwiches, as well as our deli specials, in our little deli sitting area inside of the meat market.

Mr. Meyer’s number one focus has always been and always will be his customers. He wants them to have a great experience inside all of his establishments and wants to make sure his customers receive the best quality meats, great hospitality, and great customer service!
